00300	COMPUTATION REQUIREMENTS OF THE COMPUTER SCIENCE DEPARTMENT
00400
00500 The Computer Science Department has the following
00600	kinds of requirement for computation.
00700
00800 1. Straight computer time, e.g. large numbers of additions
00900	and mulltiplication. While particular research efforts might
01000	have large requirements, at present, it seems that the IBM 360/67
01100	provides sufficient capacity for general use, and the CSD users of
01200	other facilities such as the AI Project, SLAC, and ACME are having
01300	their needs provided for through these organisations.
01400
01500 2. Hands on computers for teaching the construction
01600	of operating systems. We hhave the Hewlett-Packard 2116 which is
01700	inadequate both in size and in number for the classes. The situation
01800	may be relieved soon by the efforts to get another small computer,
01900	but this will not satisfy the requirement for al larger
02000	computer.
02100
02200 3. On line interaction with programs. The need for this
02300	comes in several sub-categories.
02400
02500 a. Students in computer science courses will learn
02600	better and will be able to do more ambitious computing
02700	projects if they can interact on line with their programs. The
02800	computation Center provides on-line editing with WYLBUR,
02900	but this is too expensive for much student use and is only a
03000	weak form of interaction.
03100
03200 b. Interactive computing for CSD graduate
03300	students and faculty. Many of the most interesting computer applications
03400	areinteractive. Both symbolic computation and artificial intelligence
03500	require in
